In the tree care industry, improper pruning by unskilled laborers or overly enthusiastic DIY homeowners is often far worse than doing no pruning at all. Poor cuts can inflict irreversible damage that permanently ruins the tree’s health, introduces rot, and destroys its structural stability. When executing heavy branch removals, our highly trained crews utilize the industry-standard 3-Cut Method to protect the tree from devastating bark tearing:

1. The Undercut: We begin by making a shallow, precise cut on the underside of the heavy branch, about a foot away from the main trunk. This acts as a vital “stop line.”
2. The Top Cut: Next, we make a top cut entirely through the branch, slightly further out than the undercut. As the heavy branch falls, the wood will naturally split, but the split stops abruptly when it hits the undercut, completely protecting the main trunk from being stripped of its vital bark.
3. The Final Cut: All that remains is a short, easily manageable stub. We then make a clean, meticulous final cut just outside the “branch collar” (the swollen area at the base of the branch). Leaving the branch collar perfectly intact is essential, as it contains the specialized cells the tree needs to quickly form a protective callus over the wound.

We never use climbing spikes on live, healthy trees that are being pruned, as spikes create hundreds of unnecessary open puncture wounds that invite disease. Instead, our climbers use specialized, advanced rope-and-harness access techniques or aerial bucket trucks to navigate the canopy safely and flawlessly.

Dormant Season Pruning (Late Winter to Early Spring) For the vast majority of deciduous shade trees in Massachusetts—such as Oaks, Maples, Elms, and Lindens—the optimal time for major structural pruning is during the late winter and early spring, while the tree is completely dormant. During the freezing New England winters, trees shed their leaves and store their energy deep within their root systems. Pruning during this dormant window offers massive advantages. Without leaves blocking the view, our arborists have a crystal-clear line of sight to the tree’s underlying architecture, allowing for incredibly precise cuts. Furthermore, because pathogens and wood-boring insects are inactive in the winter, the risk of spreading devastating diseases—such as Oak Wilt, a fatal fungal infection—is almost entirely eliminated. The tree will then vigorously heal the pruning wounds as soon as the spring sap begins to flow.

Spring and Summer Pruning While major structural cuts are best saved for winter, light trimming, deadwood removal, and hazard mitigation can and should be performed at any time of the year. Additionally, spring-flowering trees, such as Magnolias, Lilacs, and ornamental Cherries, already have their spring buds set by late fall. If you prune them in the winter, you will accidentally cut off all of their upcoming blossoms. For these species, we highly recommend pruning them immediately after they finish their spectacular spring bloom. Summer is also an excellent time to evaluate a tree for crown thinning, as the full weight and density of the leaf canopy are clearly visible.
